Use of the Internet: Questions to "Occultists"

Use of the Internet

A questionaire for Occultists
by Peter-R. Koenig

In March and April 1997, I sent around a questionaire to 282 occult-related e-mail addresses. Addressees were surfers-only, maintainers of large and/or smaller web sites and also people who run a -L of their own.

The questions did contain some word shells/euphemisms into which the receiver could project his own concepts: "active", "passive", "consumation", "occultism", "inspiring" etc. Some of my questions were "suggestive" questions regarding my essay on "The McDonaldisation of Occulture". Since my reputation as an observer of the "Caliphate" might have hindered some of the members of this organisation to answer to my questionaire, the reader of the answers published here must bear that background in mind.

59 people have answered = 21% of 282.

  • 83% consider themselves explicitely "active", 11,7% "passive" consumers of the Web.
  • 42,4% have a definitely "positive" opinion on the occult netculture ("creativity"), 30,5% a rather "negative" one.
  • 47,5% do somehow complain about the "self-referentialistic" aspect of the web sites. 13,6% find it "useful".
  • 37,3% do explicitely think that occultists have a "different approach" to the Internet than the "average" user.
  • Those who maintain a web presence of their own report mostly one ("zero"/"few"/"very little") "inspiring reaction(s)" to their presence per month (except 4 examples with more than 0-1 such mails: 20, 30, 50, 600).
  • 8,5% have asked back-answers. 2 participants wanted to know where/when the results of this questionaire are going to be published.

Of course, this "analysis" is not an academic one. I just wanted to collect a somewhat general "feeling" of what's "going on" in the "electric Occulture".

You might find here not only my questionaire but also a collection of the most impressive and most significant answers  . Let me say Thank you very much.
